Book Excerpts:
"Darkness hovered over Westcliffe and I, somehow, was right in the center of it. My arms were stretched out, being pulled in both directions. I could see everyone I knew or cared about crawling on the ground, barely able to breathe, suffocating from the thick blackness that surrounded them. I saw my mom and dad, Jamie and her parents, Ellie, Mo, Miss Adamma, and even Kyran, who was at the farthest edge of my sight. I tried to reach for them, but my arms were frozen in the air. “Run!” I screamed to them, but they, too, were held captive by the chains of fear that stole their sense of hope. My heart suffered tremendous pain, ripped apart. "
"As I sat on the floor, room slightly spinning, I thought I saw dark shadows moving on the wall. It began to really freak me out. I looked around again, still seeing them crawl about, and I began hearing hushed whispers all around. They were starting to make me feel a little crazy, and I knew I needed to get out of here. But I couldn’t leave without Jamie; I had to find her before she did something that would forever change her life."
"He then put an arm on each side of me as if he had been planning that very move all along; with hands against my car he gently pressed his moist lips to mine. I stood absolutely still like a deer, aware of its potential hunter, and felt completely caught off guard by his bewildering, yet loving gesture. His lips felt so tender and smooth. As our mouths slightly parted, I inhaled his warm, minty breath, which he released simultaneously. I could feel my heart pounding through my chest. And though the intimate moment lasted a mere few seconds, I knew in that brief period that this little girl was starting to become a woman."
